The Van Gogh watercolour Winter, in life as well will be auctioned on December 2 at Christie’s in Amsterdam (The Netherlands). The lot will be sold for an estimate of 50,000 – 70,000 euro’s.

Van Gogh presumably painted the work in 1877. This was before he actually decided to become an artist. In these days Van Gogh was drawing without any pretension and without feeling the need to explore the possibilities of the different materials.

In 1888 Van Gogh escaped the busy life of Paris and moved more south, to Arles. In Arles he rented a studio in the now famous Yellow House. Vincent described the studio in a letter to his brother Theo:

Portrait of Eugene Boch

This week’s painting of the week is the portrait of Eugene Boch. The portrait is the painting of the week because it is on show now at Van Gogh's Colors of the Night at MoMA in New York.

When Van Gogh lived in Arles, he painted several portraits of the Arlesians. Van Gogh had met Eugene Boch, who was staying in a nearby village. Boch was also an admirer of Delacroix and the two men spent time together in the late summer.

The long awaited exhibition Van Gogh and the Colors of the Night opened Sunday September 21st at the Museum of Modern Arts (MoMA) in New York.


The Dutch Van Gogh Museum and MoMA collaborated for this unique exhibition that will be on show at the Amsterdam Museum from February 13 2009. It's the first time that these museums work together.

Albertina Museum

Starting today (September 5th) Van Gogh’s largest oeuvre in 100 years will be on show in Vienna. It will be the largest presentation of the artist’s oeuvre since the jubilee exhibition in Amsterdam in 1990. The exhibition will also be the first Van Gogh show in Austria for more than half a century.

Vincent van Gogh painted this painting in 1888 when he lived in Arles. When Vincent van Gogh lived in Arles, he got acquainted with the Roulin family. Joseph Roulin was the postman in Arles, who lived in the same street as Vincent, with his wife and three children. Baby Marcelle was born during Van Gogh’s stay in Arles.
