Skull with the Burning Cigarette

Van Gogh made this painting in the winter of 1885-1886 in Antwerp
(Belgium). He rented a small room for 25 Francs a month. Vincent decorated the small room with Japanese prints on the wall. Vincent also attended the art academy to develop his skills.

Skeletons were often used
to help the students understand human anatomy. He tried to express the
lifelessness of a skull. The skull that exists of nothing more than
bones got a touch of humor from the painter, because the smoke only
comes out between the teeth.

During his stay in Antwerp Vincent became obsessed with his work and forgot the world around him. He didn’t want to give up his work and started to drink absinthe heavily. Vincent was also found to have syphilis: a sexually transmitted disease. It didn't went well with Vincent at this time.

I haven't seen this painting

I haven't seen this painting before but it's definitely one of my
favorites. In my opinion it is totally different from any other Van
Gogh painting I have ever seen.

This is definitely my

This is definitely my personal favourite!

I wonder if he used a real skeleton as an example for this painting Surprised

Skull

Based on the description of the painting, I would guess he did use a real skeleton.

When I was looking at all the paintings, I was actually wondering why this one is so different from all the other paintings in subject matter. I guess the fact that it was painted in art school, so probably as an assignment, might be the reason why. Or does anybody else have other suggestions?

Student joke

I read somewhere that this painting is usually considered as an student joke. I don't know if it was an assignment.
Vincent did paint more skulls, but these seem to be painted in Paris (considering the style of the paintings).
